DERBY CONTENDER: Instilled Regard

Jockey : Drayden Van Dyke
Trainer : Jerry Hollendorfer

Instilled Regard comes into the Kentucky Derby with 29 points and gained the #20 spot with the defection of Gronkowski. Initially primed for a break following his Santa Anita Derby 4th place finish, the connections remained hopeful that Derby spot could open up.

He gained his Derby points with finishes in the Cash Call Futurity, LeComte Stakes, Risen Star Stakes, and the Santa Anita Derby. Instilled Regard got his Road to the Kentucky Derby win in the LeComte Stakes where he defeated fellow Derby entrant Lone Sailor among other talented colts.

Instilled Regard first garnered our attention with a sneaky impressive finish behind McKinzie and Solomini in the Cash Call Futurity. Since those two aforementioned performances, Instilled Regard has been chipping away at minor placings and Derby points.

From top to bottom Instilled Regard’s pedigree is filled with American dirt class. By Arch out of Forestry mare, his immediate family gives him both speed and stamina. The late Arch was a lightly raced yet talented dual Grade 1 winner. Arch’s only finish worse than 2nd was a 9th in the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic, which is arguably one of the strongest races of all time. Arch’s track success has passed on to his offspring, siring 4 champions including Blame.

Instilled Regard’s dam Enhancing, however, did not possess that same talent only winning a maiden special weight at Beulah Park out of 7 starts. What Enhancing lacks in talent she makes up for in her bloodlines. A daughter of the newly inducted Hall of Famer Heavenly Prize, Enhancing has become a black-type producer at a very young age.

When analyzed on TrueNicks, Instilled Regard’s pedigree rates an A++. When pedigree comes into the question, Instilled Regard’s pedigree does fit a classic mold.

Instilled Regard’s Derby hopes are riding on getting back to his best form. The Instilled Regard as of late cannot hang with this exceptional group of colts. A strenuous schedule and travel could have easily caught up with him and he may not be primed to fire his best shot.

The Instilled Regard from his winter form is as gritty of a competitor as they come. While his best probably isn’t good enough for the win, he could be a dark horse for the minor placings if he regains his step.

Which Instilled Regard will show up on Derby Day is still unknown, but it can be certain that if you decide to take the risk the odds will be in your favor.
