Remembering Jockey Jose Flores

Sadly we have to write this memorial of jockey Jose Flores who passed away last night at the much to young age of 56.  Jose was riding Love Rules in the 9th race at Parx, all of a sudden his mount broke down & fell. Another horse named The Pooch fell over & appeared to have hit Jose.

He had great success at Penn National winning the riding title in 1994,1996,1997,1998. 2215 of his career victories came at Penn National. In total he has 4650 lifetime wins.

Jose was born in Peru, his father was a jockey. He learned to ride on a farm. He moved to Panama in 1983 & rode there for four years before he came to the US. His first US tracks were Calder, Hialeah and Gulfstream.

He is the all-time leading money earner at Philadelphia Park/Parx. Dave Yanuzzi has been his agent for 14 years. Dave says this about Jose “he will ride a 60-1 shot as hard as he’d ride a favorite, and work for a two-horse outfit just as soon as a 20-horse barn. He’s ridden for just about every trainer on the grounds.”

Jose is survived by his wife Joanne, and his three sons Juan, Junior, and Julian.

We at 5minutestopost want to send our sincere condolences to his family & friends. Please consider a donation to the PDJF in Jose’s memory.
