March Madness: Field of 64 – Day 1

The play in games are now over, it’s now officially time for the madness to begin. We have 4 games to play today:

12:40PM:    Tennessee (25-8)  vs  Wright State (25-9)

Tennessee finished the season strong, winning 12 of their last 15 games & just losing to the Kentucky in the SEC Championship. They are averaging 74.2 points on 43.9 percent shooting. Led by Grant Williams averaging 15.3 ppg followed by Admiral Schofield who is averaging 13.6 ppg. Tennessee is shooting 38.4 percent from beyond the 3 point line & 75.6 percent from the free throw line.
Wright State is averaging 72.1 points on 43.6 percent shooting. Led by Grant Benzinger who is averaging 14.5 points & 5.4 rebounds while Loudon Love is averaging 12.9 points & 9.8 rebounds. They are shooting 34.2 percent from the 3 point line & 71.7 percent from the free throw line.

4:00PM: South Dakota State (28-6) vs Ohio State (24-8)

South Dakota State is now in their 3rd consecutive NCAA tournament. SDS is averagng 84.9 ppg on 47.0% shooting from the field. They are averaging 10.6 three-pointers per game on 40.3% shooting from beyond the 3 point line. Led by Mike Daum 23.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg  & David Jenkins Jr. 16.1 ppg. SDS is  4-1 ATS in their last 5 games and 29-11 ATS in their last 40 games overall.                                                                        Ohio State is averaging 75.8 ppg, they are averaging 6.8 three-pointers per game on 35.3% shooting from beyond the 3 point line. Buckeyes are led by Keita Bates-Diop 19.4 ppg, 8.8 rpg & Jae’Sean Tate 12.5 ppg. Buckeyes are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-21 ATS in their last 36 neutral site games.                    South Dakota State has an explosive offense that ranks 6th in scoring offense and 12th in 3P-FG%. Ohio State has had a much better season than expected & rank 42nd in scoring defense, 24th in FG%, and 50th in defensive FG%.

7:10PM  Davidson (21-11)  vs  Kentucky (24-10)

Davidson had a very tough schedule this year, as 4 of their 11 non-conference opponents are also in the NCAA tournament. Led by Peyton Aldridge with an average of 21.5 ppg and 7.8 rpg. Davidson is scoring 76.4 points per game on 48.3% shooting from the field, 39.1% from behind the 3 point line and 79.7% from the foul line, the 3rd-best free throw percentage in the country this season.                                                Kentucky heads into their 5th straight NCAA tournament and 8th in their last 9 seasons. Kentucky had some big wins this season wins over West Virginia and Virginia Tech. Kevin Knox leads Kentucky in scoring with 15.6 ppg and PJ Washington leads them with 5.5 rpg. Kentucky is scoring 76.7 points per game on 47% shooting from the field, 36.1% from behind the 3 point line and 69.7% from the foul line this season. Kentucky is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games and 3-7-3 ATS in their last 13 NCAA tournament games. The over is 8-0 in their last 8 non-conference games.                                                                 Kentucky on paper should beat Davidson but you never know what Kentucky team shows up. Davidson has a huge edge at the foul line.

7:20PM   Houston (26-7)  vs  San Diego State (22-10)

San Diego State is averaging 77.5 ppg on 46.1% shooting from the field. They are averaging 7.3 three-pointers per game on 33.9% shooting from beyond the 3 point line. They are led by Malik Pope 12.9 ppg, 6.6 rpg & Devin Watson 12.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg. San Diego State defense is holding their opponents to an average of 67.9 ppg on 41.8% shooting from the field. SDS is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games.               Houston is averaging 77.4 ppg on 46.6% shooting from the field. They are averaging 8.6 three-pointers per game on 38.7% shooting from beyond the 3 point line. Houston is led by Rob Gray 18.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 4.5 apg &  Corey Davis Jr. 13.5 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.5 apg. Houston is holding their opponents to an average of 64.9 ppg on 39.6% shooting from the field. Houston has one of the best players in the country in Rob Gray and he will make the difference in this game.
