Belmont Park: October 14, 2017, The Value & The Vulnerable, By Paul Hundley

Hello once again everyone and welcome to the Double V! We have a ten race card today, highlighted by the G3 Futurity and the $200K Pebbles Stakes.

RACE 1: 3-1-6

Not a lot of value here. 3-BUDDY ANTHONY looks like fastest early of this group at the 6 furlong distance where half the races have been won gate to wire this meet. Trainer Jason Servos can seemingly do no wrong, 30% on the year. He and Manny Franco are 3 for last 6 together, and Buddy was 2nd at this level last out. 1-REMSTIN has the best speed figs of the bunch but is coming off a dismal showing last out finishing last of 9 vs NY bred entry allowance. Was first start since February. 1st time in for a tag for Gary Contests(19%). Will have to hope there’s pace pressure on Buddy. 6-NORTHERN GREY is 2nd off the claim for David Jacobson (22%) and 2nd off a 9 month layoff(19%). Had shown early speed in California, did have a terrible break a week ago.

RACE 2: 8-6-2

Though he’s not been on turf before showed good early speed his last race in March losing by 3 + lengths to West Coast. Yes was a 3 horse field but the fact he didn’t lose by far more is the noteworthy event. Chad Brown 27% +90 day layoff, 22% first turf. 6-KULIN ROCK had a nice effort in debut and Barclay Tagged 16% second career race.

RACE 3: 3-2

Skip this race if you can. No one in here looks trustworthy enough to lay money on.

RACE 4: 2-9-1

Though there are a few early speed types in here early, VIGOR looks like the speed of the speed and his inside draw should give him positioning early up front. Barely missed at level last out at The Spa. EPPING FOREST has been facing tougher and will be rolling late from outside under Joel Rosario. Is great at Belmont (5-3-0-1) and 2 for 3 at the distance. 1-PRAY FOR BOURBON comes in for hot trainer Mark Hennig and switches to 18% turf jock Nik Juarez.

RACE 5: 8-3-1

BANCROFT HALL’s two fast dirt starts are as good if not better than anyone else’s in here and is in for a tag for first time in brief career. THE GREAT SAMURAI cuts back in distance and moves up in class after being Claimed over 3 weeks ago by John Toscana(21% 1st off claim). Has 7 career seconds but lone win was at Belmont. PROFESSOR SNAPE also slightly bumps in class today, and will be hoping to catch fast dirt, as his only start on such resulted in a 3 length win.

RACE 6: 11-2-6

This could be a big day for Franco. SEA FOAM has not been on turf but has shown good speed on dirt, and Christophe Clement is 23% first turf. MY MR. WONDERFUL failed miserably as favorite last out in turf debut but has very good early speed and may redeem his self. DR. BASKIN is a FTS for Mark Casse(15%) by The Factor (14% first turf) and whose Dam has produced 2 turf winners so far.

RACE 7: 11-6-7

RACE 8 The Futurity G3: 3-6-4

Going for the slight upset here in BARRY LEE. After a dominant debut, threw a huge clunker in Saratoga Special, then redeemed himself in Arlington -Washington Futurity. So is he a horse that can’t stand top competition? I think too soon to tell, and 2 of his 3 have been good. Also puts blinkers on for Horacio De Paz, who is 5 of last 7 doing so! Will get 4th different jock in 4 races I. Rosario. ENGAGE will be stalking from outside for Chad Brown, and the over half million 2 year old purchase would be no surprise today. MOJOVATION comes in for Fletcher disappointing in Hopeful after nice debut win. The quality in here is not what it was in Hopeful.

RACE 9 The Pebbles: 2-4-3

Chad Brown holds a pair of aces in here in RUBILINDA and THAIS. Going with who I feel is the best closer in here in RUBILINDA. Should only improve as the distance gets longer today, and there is much expected from this 3 year old FRANKEL Filly. Chad is 30% first route. PARTY BOAT should be forwardly placed and has faced some tough Stakes company, namely Proctor’s Ledge who runs in the G1 QE2 today at Keeneland. Has only been out of the money 1 ti me in 8 turf starts. THAIS makes 2nd start over here after closing 2nd in an OC. Is multiple Group 3 placed in Europe.

RACE 10: 10-3-7
