Santa Anita: October 14, 2017, By Jeff O’Reilly

  • Race 1:

    (4) Clifton Beach stumbled at the start and lost his rider last out at 4/5. Wheels back in three weeks and should
be primed for a big effort. There isn’t much pace signed on and this one should clear easily and be very tough
to catch. (7) Royal Seeker has good tactical speed which will suit him very well here. Was 4 wide much of last
race which caused him to run a bit even. Should improve with a better ground saving trip here. (5) Tiz Indy
might outfoot the 4 early. This horse doesn’t always break sharp which gives me concern. Has been rushed up
in a few of his last starts. Should improve on his last start after having to be wide all the way around.
    Selections: 4-7-5
    Race 2:
    (5) Campaigner should sit a dream trip in this spot. Will sit just off the speed and take over at the top of the
lane. The stretch out to 6.5f should be no problem here. (4) Buck Duane adds blinkers and should clear this
field quickly. Last out he chased a quick pace and still held on well for fourth. Ran a lot better than it looks on
paper. Should improve second out. (6) Jump The Tracks broke slow and lagged back early. Made a huge
middle move into a hot pace and ran even the rest of the way. Should improve at second asking if he can relax
    on the back stretch.
    Selections: 5-4-6
    Race 3:
    (6) Make it a Triple and the (4) Braddock are the only horses with any type of speed in this race. They will both
be short prices. This will be a riders race between Maldonado and Roman. I’ll take Roman as he has been
much better at this meet. (5) Midnight Harbor will benefit from any type of duel between the top two. He’s going
to take back and make one run at it. He will be flying late at a big number and should pick up the pieces for a
    good finish.
    Selections: 4-6-5
    Race 4:
    (4) Ample Sufficiency had a rough trip last out. Tried to come up the rail and got shut off. Tipped out and still
nearly won the race. Should get a much better ride with Stevens now jumping in the irons. (6) Record Highs will
be on the lead early. Takes a bit of a cutback to the 6.5f downhill turf course here. Has previous experience
over the course which is always a plus. His speed should carry him to a good finish here. (1) Radio Silence has
raced against better over in Ireland. European shippers are a big question mark on this turf course and this
horse can beat me at a short price.
    Selections: 4-6-1
    Race 5:
    (3) Second Gear should sit a beautiful stalking trip here. Just missed last out despite chasing a somewhat hot
pace. There isn’t a ton of pace signed on so he should be able to relax much better here. (1) Vow’s Son raced
3-4 wide last out and still finished up well to only be beaten by three quarters of a length. Will appreciate the
stretch out to Saturday’s distance. (2) Topgallant takes a bit of a class drop here. Ran okay his last few at a
higher level. I am banking on his class and speed figures to propel him to a good finish here. (12) Big Day
Tomorrow has the looks of a vulnerable favorite. Has raced against better last few out and did not pick up his
feet. Drawn all the way outside this horse is a plodder and I will gladly take a shot against.
    Selections: 3-1-2
  • Race 6:

    (5) Miss Sunset is the best horse in the race and has a big pace advantage. There is no speed signed on
besides her and she should be as loose as she wants. I will not try and beat her but rather play against the
other short prices in here underneath. (3) Barbara Beatrice has 1 win in two tries on the downhill turf course.
Should sit mid pack and come home flying. If there is any horse who goes with the 4 early, this one will be the
biggest beneficiary. (1) Bad Ju Ju should sit just in behind the speed. Raced wide last three times out. Should
get a much better ground saving trip from the rail.
    Selections: 5-3-1
    Race 7:
My best bet comes here in race 7. (7) Pick One should sit a perfect trip just in behind the (9) Big Bad John. He
is stretching out from 5f the last few times out. There isn’t much speed in here and the 7 should benefit. He will
take over once the 9 backs up and never look back. I will try and play the (13) Cammy’s Music underneath to
spice up the exotics. He adds blinkers and should sit close to the pace to avoid being hung out too wide. (1)
Individualist takes the blinkers off but does have good tactical speed. He should get a good ground saving trip
in here. I will let him beat me at a short number however.
    Selections: 7-13-1
    Race 8:
    (2) Wild About Deb has the looks of a vulnerable favorite. Has raced just twice since last November and hasn’t
run well in any of them. Hasn’t made the leap from his 3 year old to 4 year old campaign. Auto toss for me. (7)
Sheer Flattery had a tendency to get floated very wide in his last few starts. Adds blinkers and should be close
to a slow pace here. (11) General Kitten broke very slow last out and still flew home to finish up for 2nd. Should
improve with a better break here. (6) Chris and Dave should be the speed of the speed. The minor stretch out
shouldn’t be a problem and I think his speed could carry him to a good finish.
    Selections: 7-11-6
    Race 9:
Taking a shot with (10) Rolling Shadow to close things out here. Took to the turf really well last out and ran a
big speed figure. Should only improve second out on the turf. (8) Battleground Slate was very wide last out and
still ran on to only be beaten a half length. Prat should be able to work out a better trip and possibly a better
result. (1) Arunachala jumps into state bred company here for a bit of class relief. Raced even in his debut and
should improve on the stretch out and second out for Peter Eurton.
    Selections: 10-8-1
