Del Mar: August 16, 2017

Race 1.   4-3-1

This starts the early pick 5 which is my favorite bet on the west coast. Little Bit Lovely looks like the best on paper and is the 2/1 morning line favorite Hall of Famer Gary Stevens stays on and will be sent from the gate going 5 furlongs. Song of Ekati needed his last race coming back from a year layoff for Mark Glatt who is having a great meet. Not to Shiny is one that will be flying late. Not a fan of the rail going short on the turf but has 2 wins at this distance.

Pick 5- 134567/12/256/8/489

Race 2. 1-2

Looks like a match race between the 1 and 2. Wild Verse takes the biggest drop in racing and has the advantage with a run over the course. Peter Miller is 22% second time out and the horse was well meant last time out, just had too wide of a trip that he wasn’t able to overcome. Number 2 Candyman Garrett showed plenty of speed last time out but stopped short. The experience will help this time as Baze remains aboard. None of the first time starters catch my eye.

Race 3. 5-2-6

Lajatico just missed last time out as the favorite. He gets a jockey switch to the best turf rider on the west in Flavien Prat. The only issue I have with this horse is that it always seems to stop near the wire. This is a wide open race and must spread. Number 2 Snow Cloud was able to get up in time last out beating our top pick. Snow cloud will be forwardly placed and be roaring down the lane to catch Lajatico.  My Dynamo returns off the bench for Jeff Bonde who has some monster works. Bonde does well with these off the bench horses and the price will be right.

Race 4. 8-2-4-5-6

Decarchery Dawn tried the dirt for the first time last time out and ran huge. He will have a ton of pace to run into today and gets the perfect post to do so. If you’re playing a smaller ticket I Would consider singling this horse. If you can afford to go deeper I recommend the 2-4-5-6; all have chances. Roman gets on the 2 Lucky With You who drops back into MC ranks and will show speed from the inside.

Race 5.  9-4-8 Spread in Pick 4  All/410/6/all

Abbey Vale drops from Grade 2 to claiming 40,000 who seems to run better in these spots. Vale gets a jockey upgrade to Prat. Wide open race have to spread to end the pick 5. To The Bar is live today and Ron Ellis likes this horse who should be on the lead. 6 year old gelding is by Kittens Joy and 3rd off the layoff; will have it his own way around the turn. Unusual Taste will sit in perfect spot behind To the Bar and will have first run at the leader.

Race 6. 10-4

Anita G. Woke up going long for the first time last time out and part of that is the way the track has played all meet favoring front runners. It also helped that Laura Werner the bug rider got on and the weight break may be the difference again this race. She’s very talented and I love the way she rides she’s only 21 and seems to be getting better and more aggressive each race.  Jill Madden is another with speed, drops in class, and returns to dirt. Very logical horse with Bejerano getting on for the ride.

Race 7. 6-8-3 WP on 6 and key 6 in DD and Exactas

Decked out catches a field that he should be able to run down as it looks like the pace will be hot out front. Drops from Gr1 Company to a much softer spot. This is my play of the day. Goldy Espy. What a lucky horse as he was trained by Chad Brown and now gets trained by Bob Baffert so you know he’s been taken care of. Now he ships in from Gulfstream which is my favorite angle at Del mar when horses come from out of town to get the ship and win bonus. Espy drops out of Gr3 Company to face weaker and should sit right off the pace of the fast runner Resposibleforlove who I’m familiar with because this horse cost me a big score in his last race. He went in reasonable fractions and looked like a winner every step of the way till he was caught on the wire.

Race 8. 5-2-9 Tri 5/129/all

This race is a head scratcher to say the least as there are plenty in here that can win. I go to Amaranta who just missed last time out as the favorite and now we’re getting 8/1; Longshot play of the Day. Max play if we get 5/1 or more.  Oh Scatty oh is turf to dirt and dropping who i’ll give one more chance to try and break his maiden as this is as low as he can go till the Los Alamitos meet.
